Seed collectors hard at work in the garden!
The seed collectors work every Wednesday throughout the year. Seeds are harvested from all areas of the Garden, between April and October. In the winter months the seeds are cleaned, packaged and labelled for sale in the Shop between March and October. Members of the group research this information from reference books and the Web and enter the details into a database on a computer.
Seed Collectors News
Fresh seeds from last summer’s collection are being packaged now by the Seed Collectors’ group of FOGS and will shortly be available for sale in The Shop in the Garden. The cost of a package is $2.25 and the quantity of seeds given is enough for sowing in a 4” pot.
Research is done for each seed in order to provide growers with the information they will need for successful germination. Each package tells the type of plant it is such as perennial or annual, its height, flower colour, hardiness zone where known, and country of origin. On the back are instructions for sowing and cultivation. Every effort is made to be accurate. However, as the seeds are collected from an uncontrolled environment, open pollination occurs and some seeds will not be true to type.
We generally collect only seeds from the species, not named forms as they seldom come true. If we do collect seeds from a named form e.g. Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ we indicate this by Crocosmia ex ‘Lucifer’. If a named form is listed it is thought to come true from seed. In some cases we have only enough seed for a few packages but there is plenty of variety so there will always be something to tempt you.
The Seed Collectors have finished packaging the seeds that they collected last summer and they are now ready for purchase in The Shop in the Garden. Please have a look at the following list to see the wonderful selection available.
