Hortline & Feature Plant Group

Hortline is a telephone advice service managed by a committed group of FOGs (Friends of the UBC Garden) with a keen interest in gardening and horticulture. Many of the Hortline members are also members of the Master Gardens Association of B.C. During the summer our calls are answered by UBC students engaged in work and research in the Garden.

Hortline receives calls from all over British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. Online questions via the UBC Botanical Garden Forums on their Web Site are also answered by some Hortline members, and originate from a larger audience spread across North America. We also continue to receive inquiries via letters and specimens delivered to the garden for diagnosis and treatment suggestions. Historical data collection reveals that our callers range from novice to expert gardeners, landscape designers, collectors, and private nursery personel. A wide range of questions have been recorded on topics such as vegetables, fruits, indoor plants, soil preparation, planting, pruning, propagation, weed and pest identification, plant diseases, planting zones, hardiness, pollination, seed germination, landscape design, arbour care, nomenclature and general horticulture.

Our lines are open year round by calling 604-822-5858. Messages can be left any time of the week and your calls will be answered Wednesdays from 12 to 3 p.m.

The Feature Plant Project
began in 2008 and is run by a few members of the Hortline Committee. A UBC Garden selection is featured regularly at the entrance to the Asian Garden and updated on the FOG website. The featured specimen showcases a particular tree, plant, flower, seed, fruit, or foliage which is noteable and showing outstanding presence in the garden.
