| Back 40 Gardeners |
The Back Forty Committee grow plants that can be propagated by division to be sold at the Plant Centre and the Perennial Plant Sale. They have about 280 different plants. They meet Wednesdays from 12-3 and on an on-going irregular basis during the summer. The Back 40 had a productive Autumn as we continued to upgrade our plant collection, propagating treasures for both the Shop and the Perennial Plant Sale. We are very pleased with some new additions from the Garden, including Cardiocrinums, Epimediums ( an expecially good evergreen one) and species Peonese. The highlight of the Fall was the arrival of our refined plant markers - improving the look of the Back 40 considerably and catering to our diminishing eyesight. We hold an enormous debt and bounty of gratitude to Jennifer Gorham for making this a reality. We love them. ![]() This Winter began with gusto as we got new bark mulch on our previously weedy paths, and the arrival of our new, and exceptionally skookum shade frames and Picnic tables - both arriving in honour of our colleague Gail Durland. We still miss her. We are delighted to be taking a lovely crop of Iris unguicularis, Hellebores and Snowdrops over to the Shop shortly after it re-opens in the New Year. February has seen us getting rid of the early weeds and putting forms around our beds. The early spring and mild weather enabled us to pot up many of our choice plants and send them down to the Plant Centre for sale, for example, an elegant selection of Anemones in a range of colours, Geranium dalmaticum and Erythronium 'Pagoda'.
