Friends of the Garden is a volunteer organization dedicated to assisting the UBC Botanical Garden in maintaining its position as a valued member of the University community and strengthening its reputation nationally and internationally as a world class centre for horticultural research and education.

The Friends of the Garden program (the FOGs) was initiated in the spring of 1976 when a group of ten volunteers took part in a training program at the UBC Botanical Garden under the auspices of then Director Roy Taylor. An additional group joined in the fall of 1976. Since that time, the FOGs have increased their membership to approximately 160 active volunteers who play an integral part in the Garden’s activities. They are responsible for many programs including guided tours of both the Main Garden and Nitobe Japanese Garden; annual plant sales; Apple Festival; Collector’s Plant Auction and Christmas wreath making, as well as operating the Hortline, Shop in the Garden and Plant Sales Center.
